- Our History
Where our winemaking legacy begins.
Solar Fortún was founded in 2007 with the planting of its first vines in the Cañada de Guadalupe, an area within the Valley known for its unique microclimate and alluvial soils rich in decomposed granite. From the very beginning, the objective was clear: to produce premium-quality wines from grapes that authentically express the character of the site.
The rootstocks, clones, and grape varieties used come from the Mercier nursery in Napa Valley, selected specifically to adapt to the characteristics of the subsoil and the region’s thermal regime. This technical approach made it possible to establish blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, as well as new plantings of white varieties such as Viognier and Marsanne.
In 2012, Santiago López joined the project as winemaker, strengthening precision in viticulture and winemaking practices. His training at the University of California, Davis, reinforced the guiding philosophy: minimal intervention, rigorous control at every stage, and a particular emphasis on developing natural acidity, aromatic freshness, and balanced structure. This work has been key to Solar Fortún earning recognition in national and international competitions.
Evolution and development of the winery
After several years of consolidation in the vineyard, Solar Fortún inaugurated its winery in 2020, located directly on the coast in El Sauzal. This strategic location not only facilitates logistics operations, but also takes advantage of the Pacific’s cool winds to maintain stable temperatures in the fermentation and barrel-aging areas, optimizing thermal control without relying exclusively on mechanical systems.
The winemaking process combines modern and traditional practices: controlled fermentations, manual grape selection, careful barrel management, and constant analysis to ensure precision in every lot. The result is a consistent, balanced, and technically sound portfolio of wines.
The vineyard as the origin of the sensory profile
An altitude of 400 meters above sea level, which moderates temperatures and promotes slower, more even ripening cycles.
Constant wind currents, which help regulate water stress and reduce sanitary risks.
Alluvial sandy soils, with excellent drainage and diverse mineral composition that adds complexity.
Low-salinity water, essential for maintaining nutritional balance in the vine.
Founder
Alberto is the origin of Solar Fortún. He began planting the vineyard in 2007 and laid the foundations of the philosophy that guides the winery: meticulous work, respect for the land, and a constant pursuit of quality. His vision set the path that his family continues today.
Winemaker
Santiago joined the project in 2012 after training in Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. Since then, he has led the winemaking process with a technical yet sensitive approach, carefully overseeing each stage to express the character of the vineyard and the microclimate of the valley.
